History of the Sonnino Mission House

The history of Sonnino Mission House is a powerful example of a space dedicated to ministry, healing, and support for those on the margins of society. Originally purchased in the early 1990s by the Kansas City Province of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood to aid those living with AIDS, it was named after the town in Italy where the founder, St. Gaspar del Bufalo, ministered with a focus on reconciliation and healing. In this spirit, Sonnino became a sanctuary for individuals affected by AIDS during a time when they were often marginalized or shunned by society and the church. The ministry provided a safe space for prayer, reflection, and counseling, as captured in an early issue of The New Wine Press.

After its initial focus on AIDS ministry, Sonnino Mission House evolved into a formation house for the Pacific Province, hosting the summer Special Formation program for several years. However, following the suppression of the Province of the Pacific in 2004, the Kansas City Province took ownership of the property.

Staying true to the original vision of supporting those on the margins, Sonnino continued to serve a broader community from 2009 to 2012. During this time, it hosted days of prayer and retreats for various groups, including priests, members of the LGBTQ+ community, those involved in outreach through organizations like St. Vincent de Paul and Catholic Worker ministries, and people affected by mental illness. The mission house became a place of healing and support, embodying the founder’s vision of ministering to those often overlooked or excluded by the church or society.
